Top Competitors for the iPad

Despite the almost total lack of publicity, and the apparent ignorance of some manufacturers about basic SEO, the iPad isn’t the only tablet on the market. A lot of Android based platforms are coming onstream, and it will be interesting to see how the previously invincible iPad fares. This could turn into a true War of the Apps, and consumers, for once, could win. Good products, and the instant word of mouth that tablets can provide, should make this a real competition.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab

Treading on the iPad’s heels is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is a pretty slick looking thing in its own right. This is an Android 2.2 Froyo-based tablet with some processing grunt and a lot of features. It’s way too soon to start talking about definitive standards for tablets, but the Galaxy Tab is looking like a good service provider tablet with the right capabilities:

The fundamental features are:

· Telephone capabilities

· Cortex A8 1.0Ghz processor,

· 512mb of RAM

· 16gb of internal memory storage

· Can take 32GB of extra memory with module

That’s pretty much the spectrum for any respectable tablet, and includes these features:

· 7 inch display

· Flash 10.1

· HD video and supported formats (DivX, XviD, MPEG-4, H.263 and H.264),

· 7 hour battery ( figure defined by HD play time)

· Texting and typing app Swype

· Front 1.3 megapixel camera for video calls

· Back 3 megapixel camera with LED flash

· Wireless 2.5G and 3G in the 900-2000 Mhz ranges

· Bluetooth

· Weight 380g

As you can see, this isn’t an iPad clone. It looks, in fact like a design based on beating the iPad at its own game, with a major brand name attached.

The iPad is comparatively heavy, at 700g. It has a bigger display, but that’s about it in that area, and the HD capacity of the Galaxy Tab is obviously based on a quality comparison concept. 7 hour batteries aren’t bad, either, particularly for chronic tablet users.

Price, apps and grunt comparisons

The Galaxy Tab seems to be coming in under Apple’s current stated price by about $100. In fairness, that’s not the whole story. Apple, being Apple, is also adding on new features, including an update service, and of course there’s the 250,000 apps which are iPad specific to be considered. Android currently only has about 100,000 and the App War has barely started.

If you actually wanted all these apps, it’d take you several years just to download those already on the market. The real issue is which are the better apps, and what the market wants. In strictly commercial terms, lugging around a lot of apps isn’t the best way to make comparisons.

The gut level comparison is Apple vs. Android, and there’s not likely to be any quick decisions on that basis. Proprietary name brand vs. open source tends to get polarized responses in the market. Many people love their own preferred brands, others are equally determined that open source should rule, and there’s not a lot of middle ground.

Whatever happens next in this very interesting battle, it’s likely to make Coke and Pepsi look pretty tame.
